City to Celebrate the Coquitlam Crunch on July 24

The City of Coquitlam is inviting Crunchers to pop by during your lunch break on Tuesday, July 24 as they celebrate the completion of the new stairs on the Coquitlam Crunch trail.

Now featuring two sets of stairs – and a total of over 890 steps – the Coquitlam Crunch provides a great, free recreational fitness circuit for those who like to challenge themselves with stair repeats.

From Guildford Way, head north on Lansdowne Drive and park along the street just past Scott Creek Middle School. Parking is also available in the gravel parking lot just south of Lansdowne. Make your way up the new stairs to join us for the opening celebration at 12:15 p.m.

Event participants will be offered a refreshing frozen treat (while quantities last). Please dress for the weather and wear appropriate footwear.

The Construction Project and Future Improvements to the Coquitlam Crunch

In the summer of 2017, the City undertook the construction of a new watermain on Westwood Plateau in order to better serve the Coquitlam residents in that area.

Because the watermain ran the length of the Coquitlam Crunch trail – and there was demand for more capacity on the trail – the City undertook the construction of a new, permanent second set of stairs. The second set of stairs allowed users to continue to ‘Crunch’ throughout the construction project.

The new stairway on the east side of the Coquitlam Crunch features a generous 3-metre (10 foot) width to accommodate two-way traffic and larger groups.

In January 2018, City Council supported further upgrades to the Coquitlam Crunch and approved, in principle, a multi-year plan that provides a vision for significant improvements along the route, including the addition of several new washroom facilities, new paved parking lots, viewing areas, outdoor exercise equipment, safer pedestrian street crossings, signage, and other trail amenities. The detail designs and budget approval for Phase 1 of the multi-year improvement plan are anticipated to go to Council later in 2018.

Feedback Supports Expansion of Coquitlam Crunch

COQUITLAM, BC, Oct. 2, 2017 – One of Coquitlam’s most popular trails – the Coquitlam Crunch – could soon see improvements and expansion based on recent public feedback.

The Coquitlam Crunch is a 2.2 km (794 foot) trail with 242 metres (794 feet) in elevation gain. During busy summer months, the trail sees as many as 52,000 visits per month and “doing the Crunch” has become synonymous with Coquitlam. The trail attracts locals as well as users throughout the region. The most popular portion of the trail is the steepest, where more than 400 stairs connect lower Lansdowne Drive to upper Lansdowne Drive.

In spring 2017, the City conducted surveys to gain feedback from Crunch users. The response was unprecedented and more than 1,700 respondents provided feedback that revealed top desired improvements including: washrooms, site furnishings and support features such as benches and drinking water fountains, and trail improvements to address loose or slippery trail surfacing and stair sections.

City staff have developed preliminary plans to prioritize improvements with implementation being spread over four phases in a five-year plan with an anticipated budget of $7 million for phases one to three. Detailed plans and budget will be provided as part of each future phase.

In addition, the Crunch is currently benefiting from improvements due to a new watermain being constructed along the trail route. In order to maintain accessibility for users, a new, permanent second set of stairs has been constructed and is expected to be open in Oct. 2017.

Improving and enhancing the trail will take the Crunch to another level, offering a more broad recreation experience to residents, as well as becoming a regional destination amenity supporting tourism and economic development.

Next steps in this process include developing a final Coquitlam Crunch Expansion Plan for Council consideration later in 2017. With Council support, phase one of the expansion could take place in 2018.

By registering online, it allows you to  pickup your Race Kit (race bib and shoe time chip) at Port Coquitlam Running Room at #202,  2748 Lougheed Hwy between 7 and 9 p.m. only on:

Thursday, Sept. 7th; and Friday, Sept. 8th. Between 7 to 9 p.m. only. Those who pick it up get 25 % off on store merchandise, except electronics.

If you are unable to pickup during this time, your kit will be ready for you at the registration table on race day.

Please note that you will be required to fill out a waiver on race day.

Crunch Kids wanted for the Coquitlam Crunch Diversity Challenge

Do you have a CRUNCH KID!? Why not register him or her in the Stair Master or Make It or Break It 4-hour challenge of the Coquitlam Crunch Diversity Challenge? Here’s one young lady who competed last year, and medaled.

“The event has four different age groups, and we’d love to see growth in our 15 and under age group,” said event founder Alex Bell.  “We’ll be awarding a gold, silver and bronze in all the age groups for male and female.”

In 2016 only two children competed in the four hour Make It or Break It, and they took home a gold and silver. The 16 to 35 year age group only had two people for the same event – both automatically medaling for completing the four hours.  “It’s easy to get a medal at our event, as we are still growing. This is only the second year we’ve given out medals, and the second year we’ve have professional time-keeping. I’m excited about the growth,” said Bell.

Last year no children 15 and under competed in the Stair Master, which is the first event of the day, starting at 8 a.m. and sees competitors put in their best time heading up the 437 stairs of the Crunch.

“We’d love to see more schools, churches, and youth groups out competing. Fitness is a lifestyle, and kids often make it look easy!” continued Bell.  “Of course, if they do not want to compete in the two timed events, they can always come out and do the Recreational, which is at their own pace.”

Online registration closes on September 7 offering a reduced entry fee. Race kits will be available for pickup before event day on September 7 and 8 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Running Room Port Coquitlam, so you can come out on event day ready to go. You can still register on event day, but come early.

Stair Master is at 8 a.m.; Make It or Break It at 9 a.m; and Recreational starts at 10 a.m.

Bring the family pet as Shaunnessy Veterinary Hospital will be on site offering tips on hiking with your four-legged friend. Parents that will not be competing, but want to watch their kids can also hang out in the Yellow Dog Brewing beer garden opening at 11 a.m.

Coquitlam Crunch Challenge early bird registration underway until May 31st

Organizers of the 8th annual Coquitlam Crunch Challenge are pleased to announce that early bird registration is underway for this year’s event which will be held on Saturday, September 9th. Registering early saves you approximately 50% off your registration fee!

Whether you are a novice or serious athlete; working on becoming the best you; or are simply looking for a great outdoor activity that supports community, the Coquitlam Crunch Challenge is more than a foot race, or about climbing the Crunch trail. The event was created eight years ago by local resident Alex Bell, who’s goal was to create a ‘Diversity Fund’ within the Coquitlam Foundation. “My vision for the future is to have people representing every diversity group to join me in the Coquitlam Crunch ‘Diversity’ Challenge,” said Bell.  In 2016 the 50+ dragon boat team, the Nothin’ Dragon Masters have take on organization of the event and funds also support their group and community programs which include mentoring challenged youth.

Diversity is more than just a difference in race or culture:

“The concept of diversity encompasses acceptance and respect. It means understanding that each individual is unique, and recognizing our individual differences.  These can be along the dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies.  It is the exploration of these differences in a safe, positive, and nurturing environment. It is about understanding each other and moving beyond simple tolerance to embracing and celebrating the rich dimensions of diversity contained within each individual.” – Source

The Challenge starts at the base of the Coquitlam Crunch at the Scott Creek Community Gardens and the full loop (up and down) of the Crunch trail is approximately 4.5km, taking the average person (walking) anywhere from 1 to 1.5 hours. The Coquitlam Crunch Challenge offers something for everyone whether you are a hardcore athlete, or you just want to get out in nature and exercise alone or with your family or friends.

Three ways to participate:

– Starting at 8 am the Stair Master  challenges athletes to see who is the fastest running up the 437 stairs of the Crunch;
–  From 9 am to 1 pm, the Make It or Break It category challenges athletes to see how many times they can go up and down the full length of the Crunch within 4 hours;
–  From 9:30 am to 1 pm with a formal start at 10 am, the Recreational category simply encourages everyone to come out and support community, get some exercise, enjoy the day and try to complete the  Coquitlam Crunch at least once or even twice in 2 hours.

Age Groups: -15 years; 16-35 years; 36-65 years; and 65+ years. A BRONZE, SILVER and GOLD will be awarded in age group for both male and female divisions for The Stair Master or the Make It Or Break It categories.

In 2017, our overall winner was Olympian Tina Connelly who completed 8 loops just under 4-hours with a time of 3:56.48, a distance of 35.2 km.  Many of our entrants participate simply because they want to work on their ‘personal best’ time, and are not necessarily interested in beating anyone. They want the achievement of simply saying, “I did it!”

Water and sports drinks will be available and free for participants thanks to generous sponsors.

Then there are those that are coming out because they’ve heard ‘all the buzz’ about the Challenge but have never even been to the Coquitlam Crunch before. They are teaming up with friends and family to finally discover what the hype is all about, and will choose September 10th as the day to finally make it happen.

The majority of those who are coming out on the big day, do so to support community.

One man with a vision, and the well-known event has grown by leaps and bounds. To date the event has raised over $16,000. With the growth,  in 2016 the Nothin Dragon Masters team became the new co-benefactors, hosts, and organizers of the event.  This is the same team who who will be helping host and compete in the dragon boat races for the BC 55+ Games at the end of September.

The Coquitlam based 50+ dragon boat team is made up of primarily seniors up to age 80 who refuse to sit idle. This diverse group, while dealing with the challenges associated with aging, aim to keep an active and healthy lifestyle. Not only does the club support close to 70 masters (male and female) athletes who compete throughout the year, they are also involved in the community and mentor challenged youth from the Tri-Cities in the sport of dragon boating through their Kateslem Kids program which came first this year at a regional youth dragon boat festival on Burnaby Lake. They also support the Riverside Secondary dragon boat team who came first internationally at the 2016  Concord Pacific Vancouver Dragon Boat Festival.

The Coquitlam Crunch Challenge Under New Leadership

The 7th annual Coquitlam Crunch Diversity Challenge is set for Saturday, September 10th, 2016 and will continue to raise awareness for initiatives that embrace diversity in Coquitlam. Founded in 2010 by Coquitlam resident Alex Bell, the event, which gives competitors the chance to see how many times they can go up and down the Coquitlam Crunch in 4 hours has experienced exponential growth. It started as a 12-hour event, and last year’s switch to the 4-hour format was greatly received.

Due to unforeseen circumstances and the event’s rapid growth, Alex Bell has handed the event over to the Nothin’ Dragon Masters team of Coquitlam, a group of dragon boaters made primarily of seniors who refuse to sit idle. This diverse group, while dealing with the challenges associated with aging, aim to keep an active and healthy lifestyle. Not only does the club support close to 70 masters (male and female) athletes who compete throughout the year, they also mentor challenged youth from the Tri-Cities in their sport; and they support the Riverside Secondary dragon boat team.

“I’ve always wanted this event to go to the community,” said Bell, “and I’m so pleased that Nothin’ Dragon has enthusiastically stepped in. I know they will do a great job.”

In 2015, overall winner, Matt Sessions completed the 4-hour Make It Or Break It with a total of 8 loops. Jackie Senchyna was the top female competitor with 6 loops, while top youth competitor was Gracie Lorenson with 7 loops.

“Competitors who compete annually have given their feedback through our Facebook page, and although 7 years ago, we started as a simple charity event, we noted the dedication of the athletes, and like other competitions, we realized we had  to step up our game,” said Bell, who will remain on as an event advisor.

Under the new management, the 2016 edition will bring in professional timekeeping thanks to TRIO Sports Events, and registration is being handled by the Running Room. “This year everyone will have a bib and time chip,” said president of the Nothin’ Dragon team, Brian Kenny. “We’re excited to also offer gold, silver, and bronze medals to our top three competitors in the Make It Or Break It and the Stair Master for both male and female in four ages groups.”

Water and sports drinks will be available for free for participants thanks to generous sponsors.  The Stair Master is a $10 entry, and the Make It Or Break It is $25. All entries $20 or over will warrant an optional tax receipt. Suggested donations for the Recreational category are  $20 for adults, $10 for youth or $40 per family, however no donation of any amount will be refused and participation is welcomed without the requirement of a donation. Registration is now underway.
