Coquitlam Community Diversity Fund Tops $20,000 Mark

Coquitlam B.C. – Organizers of the 2018 Coquitlam Crunch ‘Diversity’ Challenge, the Nothin’ Dragon Masters 50+ dragon boat team presented a $1,500.00 cheque to the Coquitlam Foundation for the “Diversity Fund” recently and to date, the event has raised over $20,000 for the Fund.

“It is great to see that after nine years, the Coquitlam Crunch Challenge continues to bring out so many people to support the fundraising goals of the Community Diversity Fund. As that fund grows so does the ability of the fund to help others,” said Dwight Yochim, Executive Director, Coquitlam Foundation.

“I would like to acknowledge the contribution of the Nothin Dragon Master’s who have been running the event and their generosity to donate not only their time but all of the proceeds to the Coquitlam Community Diversity Fund,” said Alex Bell, event founder whose vision is to have people representing every diversity group participating annually. The fund provides grants to diversity initiatives that enhance the social and/or economic integration of diversity groups into the community. “Diversity groups include age (seniors and youth), socioeconomic (ie: homeless), mental health challenges, physical disabilities, LGBTQ, new immigrants, visible minorities,” said Bell. In 2018 the Fund supported the Tri-Cities Brain Injury Support Group.

Grant applications are now being accepted for the Community Diversity Fund, and groups may apply by contacting the Coquitlam Foundation by February 15.

Looking toward the 10th annual Coquitlam Crunch Challenge which will be held Saturday, September 7, 2019, organizers are actively seeking sponsors to support the cause. Interested groups or businesses can email coquitlamcrunch@gmail.com.

Coquitlam’s Diversity Fund Growing Through Crunch Challenge Event

Coquitlam B.C. – On January 6, organizers of the eighth annual Coquitlam Crunch ‘Diversity’ Challenge presented a $1,000.00 cheque to the Coquitlam Foundation for the “Diversity Fund.”

“It was fantastic to see the results of the hard efforts by everyone who worked on the 2017 Coquitlam Crunch Diversity Challenge last September,” said Dwight Yochim, Executive Director, Coquitlam Foundation. “The rain on the day of the event didn’t dampen anyone’s demeanour as I saw smiles on everyone’s face including those who repeatedly ran the Crunch’s challenging stairs. The funds raised in 2017 bring the Community Diversity Fund total to almost $20,000.”

Grant applications are now being accepted for the Community Diversity Fund, and groups may apply by contacting the Coquitlam Foundation by February 16.  The Fund recently supported a Coquitlam-based job fair that was hosted by ISSofBC focusing on local refugees and new immigrants, attracting more than 150 participants.

“The more we can grow the fund the more we can grant,” said Alex Bell, Coquitlam resident and event founder whose vision is to have people representing every diversity group participating annually.  Bell is also the principal of the donor-advised, foundation managed diversity fund which provides grants to diversity initiatives that enhance the social and/or economic integration of diversity groups into the community. “Diversity groups include age (seniors and youth), socioeconomic (ie: homeless), mental health challenges, physical disabilities,  LGBTQ, new immigrants, visible minorities,” said Bell. “We’ve made great strides with this community event, and I’d really like to thank the Nothin’ Dragon Masters who came on board as event organizers in 2016.”

“We’re excited about the growth of the event,” said Crunch Challenge co-chair Brian Kenny who is also the president of the Nothin’ Dragon Masters, Coquitlam’s only 50 + dragon boat team. “Looking toward this year’s event, we are actively seeking sponsors to make the Sept. 8 event even better. Coquitlam Crunch Diversity Challenge 2017 the Best Yet!

The much needed rain fell, but nobody cared, and the 8th installment of the Coquitlam Crunch Diversity Challenge was our best event to date!  Over 300 took part on September 9, and over $4000 (and counting) which will go toward the Coquitlam Foundation and the Nothin’ Dragon Masters senior dragon boat team and their initiatives. A highlight of the day was a presentation of $800 from the community diversity furn to ISSofBC.  Youth groups, Kangho Hapkido Martial Arts, and 3D Basketball were this year’s presenting community partners and donated close to $1000 each.

We’d like to applaud our volunteers who not only helped us from bright and early on event day ensuring needs were met and participants were safely crossing roads etc., they were a huge help leading up to the event assisting with ways to improve this year’s experience, and putting in time on location at the busy trail telling Crunchers about the event beforehand.

ISSofBC receives $800 grant at the 2017 Coquitlam Crunch Diversity Challenge

On Saturday September 09, 2017, during the Coquitlam Crunch Diversity Challenge event, ISSofBC (Immigrant Services Society of BC) received this year’s Coquitlam Community Diversity grant of $800. The grant will be used to organize a career fair for immigrant and refugee job seekers in Coquitlam and the surrounding communities. There will be booths of service providers showcasing all the services available to immigrants and refugees; Intercultural competency training to increase cultural awareness; and company booths allowing employers to meet participants and to provide job opportunities.

ISSofBC will be inviting local employers who are hiring various kinds of positions. ISS has connections with some employers who specifically would like to give those opportunities to newcomers. A tentative date has been set for November for the job fair to take place.

The Community Diversity grant, which is administered by the Coquitlam Foundation, was started in 2010 when founders of the grant, Laurel Lawson and Alexander Bell started the Coquitlam Crunch Diversity Challenge as a fundraiser for the fund. Through the Coquitlam Foundation, the fund provides community grants to organizations operating in Coquitlam that undertake projects that promote the social or economic integration of any one of the eight diversity dimensions: Ages, Faiths, Cultures, Sexual Orientation, Mental and Physical abilities, Gender, Socio-Economic Level and Ethnicity.

The Coquitlam Crunch Diversity Challenge is now in its 8th year. Since its first year the event has continued to grow and in 2016 the Nothin’ Dragon Masters, a dragon boat team from the Dogwood Seniors Society joined in to help grow the event even larger. The Nothin’ Dragon’s support diversity through their activities operating a senior’s team and two local youth teams. These teams are important for the social integration and well being of these two age groups. The money raised through the Coquitlam Crunch Diversity Challenge now goes to support both the Nothin’ Dragons and the Community Diversity Fund.

8th Annual Coquitlam Crunch Challenge Awarding Medals in Four Age Groups

This is the second year  the Coquitlam Crunch Diversity Challenge will award medals in four age, as official time-keeping is again being handled by Trio Sport Events.

“Everyone will have a bib and time chip,” said president of the new event organizers Brian Kenny, President, Nothin’ Dragon Masters. “We’ll hand out gold, silver, and bronze medals to our top three competitors in the Make It Or Break It and the Stair Master for both male and female in four ages groups.”

Medal presentations will follow directly after the Stair Master at approximately 8:45 a.m. and the Make It Or Break It medals will be presented before 1: 30 p.m. The full event schedule is at the base of this article.

Age groups are: -15 years; 16-35 years; 36-65 years;  and 66+ years. A BRONZE, SILVER and GOLD will be awarded in age group for both male and female divisions.

Although online registration has closed, you can still register on event day starting at 7 a.m. on location at the Crunch base camp.

Here are the three ways you can still participate:

  • Starting at 8 am the STAIR MASTER challenges athletes to see who is the fastest running up the 437 stairs of the Crunch – Fee is  $20 / $15 Youth / $18 Seniors
  • From 9 am to 1 pm, the MAKE IT OR BREAK IT category challenges athletes to see how many times they can go up and down the full length of the Crunch within 4 hours – Fee is $30 / $20 Youth / $22 Seniors
  • From 9:30 am to 1 pm with a formal start at 10 am, the RECREATIONAL category simply encourages everyone to come out and support community, get some exercise, enjoy the day and try to complete the Coquitlam Crunch at least once or even twice in 2 hours – Fee (suggested donation) is $20 individual / $40 family, but any amount will be received!

If you do not feel like competing, but wish to support the Coquitlam Foundation‘s ‘Diversity Fund’ and co-benefactors the, Nothin’ Dragon Masters senior dragon boat racing team,  join our RECREATIONAL category that will formally start at 10am.  Perfect for the entire family.  We also have a beer garden this year with a bird’s eye view of the start / finish line and the trail!

Yellow Dog Brewing sponsors Beer Garden for Coquitlam Crunch Diversity Challenge

We’ve been working long and hard on this one, and it was hard to keep it a secret until we had all the proper protocols and insurance in place, but we are thrilled to announce that we are having a beer garden this year, thanks to the generous support of Yellow Dog Brewing!

The beer garden will be set up at the base of the Crunch during this year’s Coquitlam Crunch Diversity Challenge, offering patrons and competitors a cold one as they enjoy the day and support community. All sales of Yellow Dog brew will go directly to the event charitable causes, the Coquitlam Foundation “Diversity Fund” and the senior dragon boat team, Nothin’ Dragon Masters to support their community initiatives with youth.

“Yellow Dog has been a sponsor of our dragon boat team for some time now,” said Brian Kenny, president, Nothin’ Dragon Masters, a team based out of Dogwood Pavilion who train at Rocky Point. “They are always doing something to support community, and we really appreciate their support of this event!”

The beer garden will be open between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Two pieces of ID are required. Please drink responsibly and plan a safe ride home.

Registration is underway in three categories, the Stair Master at 8 a.m.; the Make it or Break It 4-hour challenge from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m; and the Recreational which starts formally at 10 a.m. after presentations, words from the mayor, organizers and event founder Alex Bell, and a warmup led by Leigh Brandt.

Online registration closes on September 7 offering a reduced entry fee. Race kits will be available for pickup before event day on September 7 and 8 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Running Room Port Coquitlam, so you can come out on event day ready to go. You can still register on event day, but come early.  The Recreational category will be ‘by donation’ on event day, and no amount is too large or too small.

Coquitlam Crunch Challenge registration drive underway!

THANK YOU TO OUR VOLUNTEERS!

You will see some smiling faces along the Coquitlam Crunch trail during the coming weeks! We want to thank our dedicated volunteers for giving up their time to help spread the word about the Coquitlam Crunch ‘Diversity’ Challenge set for Saturday September 9th.

Leading up to the event, now only 1 month away, volunteers will be handing out information cards and answering questions on how to register and support the 8th annual initiative which gives all proceeds to the Coquitlam Foundation “Diversity Fund” and the Nothin’ Dragon Masters 50 + dragon boat team and their youth mentoring initiatives.

“The event would not be where it is today without our volunteers,” said founder Alex Bell. “So many people have supported over the years, and many hands make light work!”

“I’m very pleased to have the Nothin’ Dragon Masters organizing again this year! The event has grown, and to have such an enthusiast group of people step in and take this on is admirable.”

The dragon boat team, with ages ranging from 50 through 80 years of age is operated under the Dogwood Senior’s Society.  Not only is the group a perfect example of diversity, the team also mentors challenged youth in the sport of dragon boating through their Kateslem Kids program. On top of training almost year round, and keeping up with their race season costs (they race against all ages throughout BC), they also sponsor the Riverside Secondary dragon boat team.

“It’s a great event to be a participant in,” said Brian Kenny, Nothin’ Dragon Masters president, “as you can come out for the exercise and do the Crunch once or even twice in the Recreational category; or for those more fit and competitive-minded, participants can sign up for the Stair Master or Make It or Break It challenges.”

“We’re really encouraging families and community groups to come out together and walk the Crunch.  This event is all about community.”

8th Annual Coquitlam Crunch Challenge for All Ages and Fitness Levels

Registration for the 8th annual Coquitlam Crunch Diversity Challenge scheduled for Saturday, September 9th is underway.  Young or old, and no matter your fitness level, you can take part!

“The Coquitlam Crunch Challenge is a great family event,” said event founder Alex Bell.  “Last year we had many families walk and run the trail. We even had one woman with her dog and child run the Stair Master together.”

The 2017 edition will once again have professional timekeeping thanks to TRIO Sports Events, and medals will be awarded for both male and females, in four age groups.

Our pre-event registration is being handled by the Running Room, and the Port Coquitlam Running Room location is offering package pickup during select hours so you can arrive on event day ready-to-go! Simply go to Running Room, create a user name and password, and sign up to take part!

Event posters, handbills, and promotional cards will be seen throughout the Tri-Cities. The event planning committee is already busy handing out information about the upcoming event, which will support not only the dragon boat team which functions under the Dogwood Seniors Society and has an average age of 65 years, but due to the tireless efforts of event founder Alex Bell, the event created the Coquitlam Foundation’s ‘Diversity Fund” and to date has raised over $18,000.

Event planning committee members will be out at the the Crunch Trail over the coming weeks to talk to Crunch users about getting involved in the upcoming challenge which provides participants three ways to get involved. The easiest way to get involved is to simply show up on September 9 and make a donation, and enjoy the Recreational component, perfect for families or large groups. Those up for a big challenge can register for the Stair Master which will see who is the fastest up the 437 stairs of the Crunch; or they can register for the 4-hour Make It or Break It challenge, to see who has the fastest time, with the most up and down 280m loops of popular hiking trail. Events run from 8 a.m to 1 p.m.

Next Coquitlam Crunch Challenge Planning Meeting set for June 12th

Organizers of the Coquitlam Crunch Challenge, the Nothin’ Dragon Masters dragon boat team have taken the helm for a second year and are holding the next planning meeting in June. Anyone wishing to help out with  this year’s event is asked to turn out on Monday, June 12th at the Coquitlam Library at 7pm in the City Centre Boardroom (upstairs).

“We are seeking people who can help in the planning stage as well as on the day of the event,” said Brian Kenny, president of the Nothin’ Dragon Masters. “We are heavy into our planning phase, so we are looking for people who can assist with helping the event grow.”
